Names....

Lots of blogs this month as we celebrate my dad but also as I catch up on Rafi and this new little one.

Next Friday we have our anatomy scan. I am so nervous, I really am, but hoping, hoping that things are okay. We will find out the sex, if the baby cooperates, and mostly people are guessing 'girl'. Mind you I was 100% sure it was a girl before and of course we were wrong. I have a horrible track record when it comes to this sort of thing.

In any case we're trying to come up with a list of names if only because we really do need to think about this baby as being potentially real. We've been feeling very cautious, and for the most part we still are. But names... Fia, we clearly need your input!

Boys/girls... please share your ideas. I had all my students come up with some names and I'll have to look through them to see if any of them are appealing. I generally don't love the names that are popular in the US so use your imaginations :)

  1. Alex, if I am not wrong Ravi was in your name list with poppet 1 right? I love that name Ravi (= Sun , brightness) ! Another would be Rishit ( = the best )
And the suggestion for little girl's name - Anvi ( = the first ray of rising Sun ) , Avani (= mother Earth) , Ragini (= a melody) , Rati ( = most beautiful girl)

Most of the names above are Sanskrit origin. I tried to rhyme the names with Rafi :-) Good luck in the search :-)

  2. I love the name Gaia for a girl, meaning 'Earth' or 'Earth Goddess' and I think it would be a name that'd resonate well with your green-living.

I like Theo for a boy...:)

    Have fun choosing! xx

  3. Here I am!!
You knew I couldn't stay away from a post like this.

I do think Theo would go really nicely with Rafi if this little one's another boy. Theo Oliver-Campbell. (fwiw, my gut says "boy")

And ACTUALLY, Thea is one of my secret faves for girls. That would be really pretty! No clue whether it's your thing, though.

Laura and I can't ever use Hazel for a little girl now that we've given that name to our dog (!), but we met a kiddo named Hazel recently, and I can't even tell you how sweet and unusual and lovely it was.

I think you need to give us a general sense of genre before we can really get into this, Alex :) What are you and R talking about for possibilities?
HURRAY! I'll be returning with more obsessive naming fun.
    xo.
    love you folks.

  4. what was the name you said you were considering for a girl? I've forgotten but remembered I liked it very much. My friend has just called her little boy Walter which actually really suits him. I like some of the old names..

  5. Chaitra, I love some of those names! Ravi was on our Rafi list (what a good memory you have!)! I just love Anvi (I hope I'm pronouncing it correctly when I say it out loud. Keep those names coming!

Ariella, love those names, too. Theo was also on our original Rafi list. I still like it a lot.

Fi, good question about theme. I think if it's a boy then we might want to either go for another R name (but they are a bit lacking) or another Basque/Arabic name). But who knows! I don't mind Xavier because it has the same roots as Rafael, though I don't love it. Mind you I never loved the name 'Rafael' but we just knew it would suit our boy. Names are so funny... I might LOVE them but they just don't sound right on our child! And you and Chaitra are the only ones to have really said 'boy'! Honesty we don't mind either way, but I think I would love to experience raising a girl. But another little boy... oh, gorgeous!

Lou (and this is for you, too, Fi) the name we like for a girl is Isla. It's very uncommon in the US though I know it's getting more common in the UK. The name would be Isla Marlena (as a nod to my my mum). We would honestly love to honour Dad and use 'Archie' but my sister's boy is named Archie even though they actually use his middle name as his first name. We may think about giving Archie as a middle name and then possibly use it as a first name (if my sister doesn't kill me... !!)

And, Fi, Thea was on our original girl list, too! I was looking at it the other day. Some names I was left wondering what on earth we were thinking!

Keep the names coming (and Fi, I had a weird friend named Hazel and though it's a lovely name it's a bit of a no no on that basis!).

  6. I don't think you'll go for this, but I started thinking about Basque names, and I remembered that I know a little girl just about Rafi's age whose name is Basque - she's Alazne, and goes by Laz. Her name means "miracle", I believe. I think it's one of the kickiest, most gutsy and excellent names ever.

Isla is beautiful, and goes so sweetly with your last names and with Raf's name. Love it. Does it feel like "it" - like if this is a girl she'll be Isla?

A wonderful R boy name is Ronan, which is Irish and means (this is painfully wonderful) "little seal". Very lovely and Maine-appropriate.

Oh, and as to gender - what do YOU think? I do feel rather strongly boy-ish on this one, but I am almost always wrong :)
